The College Interview

I think a leaned towards an interview because for my entire experience at college, I had always wondered if other people had similar views on what college did for them or whether it was just expected of them to go. My mindset on college has greatly changed, however it wasn’t always positive. I didn’t think that I would go to college because I was already working as a professional ballet dancer in North Carolina. My passion for 18 years had finally become a reality and I tried to do my best to hold on to that dream that I had since I was 11 years old. Unfortunately, my bone anatomy made a stress fracture in my second metatarsal a regular two-year occurrence. I had already had 3 separate occurring fractures, however, when it was coming to the fourth time, and I had sadly come to the realization that I wouldn’t be able to prevent such an injury while dancing on pointe. I decided that for my own mental stability, I had to take a break from dance. College was the next step and that was that. I applied only to Boston University, mostly due to the fact that it would help my family greatly financially if I were able to get in. I was grateful that I was able to continue doing art, but I didn’t have an idea or the basic skills in taking on college.

Now that I am in my senior year of college, I think I have grown out of the idea that I wasn’t able to hold onto my dream of being a ballet dancer, but rather life happens and I can still use my skills in dance just differently in my art. That being said, I didn’t feel like that until very recently, hence which is why I wanted to conduct this interview with this question “what who and why was your reason for coming to school?

I was able to interview a friend of mine, my boyfriend, my father, and myself. Although my interviewees weren’t strangers, I knew that each person had a unique perspective on their experience in school and that the answers would be quite different, making the video outcome more interesting.

END OF INTERVIEW

Everyone’s input into the project was really helpful. I looked forward to setting up the interview table and the cameras and it was very satisfying to try to match them together. Unfortunately, I had filmed on two different kinds of phones due to my phone lacking storage so some of the videos came out with a lower resolution quality. I tried to edit the lighting so that it matched with the other videos but I could only do so much. I also had to do laundry a few times so that I could keep wearing the same outfit on three separate occasions.

I would say that the hardest challenge that I had was cutting down the amount of footage that I had. To get down to a two-minute video, I had to cut over an hour and a half of footage. It was difficult because everyone’s story was so detailed and unique but in the end, I wasn’t able to incorporate everything. However, I enjoyed the process of editing the videos. I think I got the bare minimum without leaving out any certain details and I found it kind of therapeutic and something that I enjoyed. Hope that I have more opportunities in the future to edit videos by organizing their content and giving them pace and rhythm.
